I have been meaning to write about my opinion on Anora for a while. I went in not knowing much about it. But I wasn't even mid way through when I was certain this film was not directed by a woman. Now, there are amazing things about the film that I will list further down, but the main issue for me was the lack of background history and depth Anora's character was allowed. As a woman, I wanted to know more: how did she end up in this life, who were her parents, where did she come from, what was her childhood like, had she ever had a broken heart. By depicting women as merely sex workers who may develop a crush on a rich boy and dream about their big ticket out, the film fails at the opportunity of showing the nuances, and the realities of people in this line of work. For me, this film was made by "boys" for "boys", and it's not something I was blown away by. So here's my take:
🔥My take on why to love it
Mikey Madison does an amazing job as the lead in the film
The ending was well crafted and made the 2h+ watch worth it
There are unexpected twists on some characters who are docile when they are usually depicted as brutes (eg: Igor)
🔥My take on why not to love it
Missed opportunity to add more nuance and depth to the main character, and give us her point of view
The film was slightly too long
Some characters were too stereotypical/acting was mediocre in comparison to others (eg: Ivan's parents)
Final rating: 3.0 / 5
